About this activity

The Art Gallery of New South Wales is one of Australia's finest cultural institutions — and one of its most generous, with free general admission always. Sunday 26 April is the perfect day to visit: the post-ANZAC-Day long weekend means the city is quieter than usual, and the gallery's weekend family programs are in full swing.

Across the two buildings — the classical heritage wing and the spectacular new Sydney Modern building — families can explore everything from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art to European masters, contemporary Australian works and striking photography. Weekend roving activities see gallery educators pop up with art-making materials inspired by works on display. The Domain parkland outside is perfect for a post-gallery picnic.

Families can look forward to:

  • Free general admission to both the heritage building and Sydney Modern — always
  • Weekend family art-making activities with roving gallery educators
  • The stunning Sydney Modern building with spectacular harbour views from the roof terrace
  • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander galleries — one of the finest collections in Australia
  • The Domain parkland right outside — perfect for a family picnic after the gallery
  • Café and restaurant in both buildings for a relaxed family lunch
  • Easy access via St James, Museum or Martin Place train stations
