About this activity

The Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability in Waverton is one of North Sydney's best-kept secrets — and these school holidays it's hosting a brilliant free eco STEM workshop for older kids.

On Wednesday 15 April, children aged 9–12 get to build their very own solar-powered toy car from a kit, test how it responds to different light conditions, then race it against the other kids' creations. It's engineering, environmental science and pure fun all rolled into one.

Families can look forward to:

  • Hands-on solar car construction using real engineering kits
  • Learn how photovoltaic cells convert sunlight into electricity
  • Race your car against fellow participants at the end of the session
  • Run by North Sydney Council in a stunning heritage waterfront setting
  • Spectacular views over Berry Island and Sydney Harbour
  • Easy parking and access from Waverton or Wollstonecraft station
