About this activity

The Festival of Democracy invites Sydney families to step inside NSW Parliament House on Friday 17 April for a free and fascinating look at how our state is governed. This isn't a dry civics lesson — it's an engaging, hands-on experience designed for curious kids and families.

NSW Parliament House on Macquarie Street is one of the oldest surviving public buildings in Australia, and the free guided tours bring its history and function to life. Kids can sit in the chamber, hold a mock debate, and discover how laws are actually made.

Families can look forward to:

  • Free guided tours of the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council chambers
  • Hands-on democracy activities — mock debates, voting simulations and more
  • Heritage displays about the history of NSW Parliament since 1824
  • Q&A sessions with parliamentary staff and educators
  • Stunning heritage architecture on historic Macquarie Street
