About this activity
The Pier Street Underpass at Darling Harbour has become something remarkable for the April school holidays — Imagination Station, a free all-ages interactive installation where space exploration meets hands-on creativity. It's the kind of place where a five-year-old and a twelve-year-old can both be completely absorbed at the same time, building rockets, decorating astronaut masks and designing spaceships side by side.
The installation runs free as a drop-in all day, every day from 4–19 April, which makes it perfect for a spontaneous visit or a planned adventure. Russ the Story Bus — the travelling library from the Sydney Writers' Festival — pulls up regularly for author storytimes. A giant illustrated art cube by celebrated Australian illustrator James Gulliver Hancock anchors the space and is worth seeing on its own.
Families can look forward to:
- Free drop-in space-themed art and craft activities — no bookings, just turn up
- Build your own rocket from a range of materials and launch it into your imagination
- Decorate an astronaut mask to wear home as a souvenir
- Design and colour your own spaceship — guided by space-age prompts
