Vivid Sydney's free Light Walk is one of the great family nights out — a single continuous trail of light installations that takes you on a journey through three of Sydney's most iconic precincts. No tickets, no entry fees, no bookings: just turn up after 6pm and start walking.
The route
The 6.5km walk connects Circular Quay, The Rocks, Barangaroo and Darling Harbour in a seamless loop. The centrepiece is the Sydney Opera House, whose iconic sails are transformed nightly into a canvas of shifting colour and pattern. Along the way, more than 43 light installations and large-scale projections illuminate buildings, parks and the harbour foreshore.
Family tips
- The route is fully pram-accessible — wide footpaths throughout.
- Go early (6–8pm) if you have young children — the crowds thin later in the evening.
- Wednesday and Thursday nights are the least crowded.
- Dress warmly — Sydney nights in May are cool (10–15°C).
- Circular Quay train and ferry stations are right on the route.
- Combine with the free Laser Lightfall at Cockle Bay (hourly from 6pm) and the Star-Bound Drone Show (Sun–Wed 7:30pm & 9:30pm).
Running every night from 22 May to 13 June 2026. Lights switch on at 6pm and run until 11pm. Australia's largest annual event — free for the whole family.
